Joan Hill Scholarship

Provided by Seattle Foundation

Joan Hill has lived in the Seattle area for more than forty years where she raised her four children and where she now enjoys spending time with her grandchildren. Her strength, commitment to her family and community and her love of young people are an inspiration. Joan never tires in her giving whether it’s to those she has known all of her life or to those whom she is meeting for the first time. Joan is an example that one person can make a difference. We offer The Joan Hill Scholarship to honor Joan and her ongoing support and encouragement of others. The Joan Hill Scholarship is available to all students regardless of their class standing but this scholarship gives preference to students that have experienced adversity outside of the classroom and have shown perseverance and determination in overcoming that adversity.   1. Preference will be given to those students who have demonstrated resilience when experiencing adversity. Adversity comes in different forms, but some examples are financial struggles, personal tragedies, housing insecurity, displacement from your country of origin, or involvement in the foster care system. 2. Did you include two letters of recommendation? The letters should be from people who know you through your academic or employment experience or your community involvement. If you are or have been homeless or in the foster care system, one of your references must verify this to receive preference on that basis. (do not submit letters from relatives) 3. Did you write a brief essay of 250-1000 words? Tells us about yourself, how you’ve overcome adversity in your life, and what your goals are for the future. How do you plan to contribute back to your community in the future?
